Morning!! I hope you are all feeling fresh today 🙂 If not then read on… Here are some tips to get you feeling sprightly and awake. Nail these pre 0800hrs for as many consecutive days in a row and I guarantee that you will become a morning person.
1. Get out of bed within 10 minutes of waking up
This doesn’t only help you to actually get going but mentally it helps you to kickstart your day. You will be surprised how well rested you are if you just your body a chance to move from rest to play quickly! Another thing that I always do when I get up is to instantly make my bed. I’m a stickler for unmade beds.
2. Down a pint of water
Make sure this is slightly colder than room temperature. H2O is a great way to wake your metabolism up and to flush out any toxins your body needs to rid itself of. During sleep, your body works totally differently to when you are awake and so you need to have a clear transition, mentally, between the two. If you are able to habituate yourself into knowing that the difference between your body sleeping and waking is a giant glass of lovely fresh water then it will slowly become like filly yourself up with fuel for the day.
I won’t lie to you, this is a hard one for me. I really am not a fan of food that breakfast traditionally heralds. I have to often force myself to pretend that I like muesli or that I’m overjoyed about digging into a boiled egg. Whether I like it or not, I cannot deny the difference in my day between eating a good breakfast than not.
4. Set your intentions for the day
This is one of my favourite daily rituals. I absolutely love setting out a few things that I would like to achieve for the day. I never feel that I have failed if I don’t manage to get through all of them because they are simply intentions and not actual goals. They set me up nicely for the day and get my mind in order.
5. Have a cold shower!
Eeeeeeep, this one may seem like a total no go for most of us, especially if we live in the northern hemisphere! What I suggest is that you start your morning shower off a warm rather than hot, and then gradually turn the hot water off entirely. If you are not a morning person and struggle to wake up then this is a sure fire way to get yourself awake and yelping! Benjamin Hardy says, “cold water immersion radically facilitates physical and mental wellness. When practiced regularly, it provides long-lasting changes to your body’s immune, lymphatic, circulatory and digestive systems that improve the quality of your life. It can also increase weight-loss because it boosts your metabolism.” It’s a total no brainer!
So there you have it. Give yourself a week of trying all 5 of these every morning and let me know how you get on!
